Terms and Definitions![]() Vanilla = Person not involved in BDSM interests. Sadist = One that inflicts and derives pleasure from giving pain. This is not to be confused with cruelty or abuse. Masochist = One who derives pleasure from pain. Bondage = Any practice involving restraints placed on the body to restrict freedom of movement. Dominate = One who is given the control in a consensual exchange of power between two people. Submissive = One that gives their control to another or situation. Dom = Male Dominate. Domme = Female Dominate, also Dominatrix. Sub = shorten term for submissive. Top = Generic term for Dominate or a Partner that plays the Dominate role in a scene without psychological exchange of Dominance and submission. Bottom = Generic term for submissive or a play partner that takes the submissive role without psychological exchange of Dominance and submission. SAM= Smart As*ed Masochist Brat = Challenging submissive. Play Partner = Someone that interacts in a scene with you, usually on a regular basis. ![]() Safe word = A word, a phrase, or an action used by the submissive as a signal to stop the scene or reduce the intensity. Silent alarm = A safety precaution used by players that are new to one another. For example; a submissive, playing with a dominant for the first time, might arrange for a friend to be near a telephone at a prearranged time. If the submissive does not call at the time, the friend will be alerted that something has gone wrong and will take steps to see that the submissive is safe. Scene = The BDSM community and things associated with it or, an interaction of a Dominate and submissive at play. |
